CBD Lab Reports: How to Read & Understand Test Results

How to Read and Understand CBD Lab Reports

When it comes to ingesting anything, you want to know what’s inside it and how it will affect you, right? So, why should CBD be any different? Although you don’t necessarily need a medical license to read a CBD lab report, you do need some basic level of knowledge of whether the products meet your high standards. Unlike most consumer products like vitamins and supplements, CBD is often lab tested. And with more CBD products hitting the market, the demand for accurate and reliable lab reporting is essential. But what happens once you get your hands on a CBD lab report? Here’s a handy guide that will take you through the steps on how to read your CBD lab report.

5 Steps to Reading and Understanding YOUR CBD Lab Reports

Locating the CBD Lab Report

First off, locating a report for lab-tested CBD should never be like a scavenger hunt. The manufacturer or site offering CBD should have all the lab reports handy online. Cloud 9 Smoke Co. makes it incredibly easy for you to locate and read  CBD lab reports. Websites offering CBD should have a link or page dedicated to updated CBD lab reports.

Different Types of CBD

Okay. So you located the CBD lab report. What’s next? The first item you need to understand is the varying types of CBD and how they produce different types of lab results. There are 3 types of CBD that have different cannabinoids,. We’ve listed them below:

  • CBD Isolate - Contains a pure CBD molecular structure, typically in crystalline form with the hemp plant containing dozens of compounds that work synergistically with CBD to exert a powerful biological effect.
  • Broad-Spectrum CBD - contains lots of terpenes and cannabinoids besides just CBD — however, this type of CBD contains nearly untraceable amounts of THC or a threshold of less the 0.03%.
  • Full-Spectrum CBD - is basically identical to broad-spectrum CBD oil. However, full-spectrum CBD is believed to have more therapeutic compounds than CBD isolates. CBD isolate contains only CBD compounds, whereas full-spectrum CBD products contain CBD molecules, but they also contain trace amounts of THC, CBG, CBN, CBC, CBDA, and THCV. Not that full-spectrum CBD will have no more than 0.03% THC. Full-spectrum products are considered the premium of CBD.

1. Pass or Fail

The first item you should look at is the PASS or FAIL status. This type of status is usually at the top of your CBD lab report and shows whether the product passed the test for ingredients and the total amount of those ingredients. Your CBD lab report will also show whether your product has been contaminated with ingredients that should not be there, which includes residual solvents, pesticides, mycotoxins, micro-toxins, and heavy metals.

2. Legal or Not Legal

The next part of your CBD lab report is the data on the total THC level. Only trace amounts of THC are legally acceptable in CBD products in the US. If you weren’t already aware, THC is the compound that creates that “high” effect and is associated with cannabis/marijuana products. Good, quality CBD will not get you high. All high-quality CBD lab reports will verify the total THC levels.

3. CBD Levels

Most CBD lab reports have a standard format that clearly indicates how much CBD is in your product. Another essential part of a CBD lab report is indicating how much CBD is available per unit. For instance, the lab report should indicate milligrams per gram and milligrams per unit. If you see a low ratio or number of milligrams, your CBD product will not be as effective. You can also check the levels of ingredients of all the other compounds in the product, such as CBL, CBGA, CBG, and more.

4.Organic Compounds

Cloud 9 Smoke Co. is dedicated to offering you only the best CBD available. We take pride in sourcing products from organic manufacturers. On your CBD lab report, you will be able to view the organic certifications. A majority of CBD lab reports will show the PPM (parts per million) of every organic compound and whether or not there are pesticides or heavy metals.

5. Purity Levels

Contamination level is a key component of your CBD lab report. As with anything being manufactured, there is always the possibility of product contamination. That’s why it is important to look at the ingredients and look for things that should not be in your product. The lab workers who prepare your reports will also include an analysis of residual solvents and other contaminants.
