Does the Water in Water Pipes Really Help?

Does the Water in My Water Pipe Really Help?

Water pipes, we’ve seen them all before and have definitely had an experience with them once or twice. Most of us at Cloud 9 Smoke Co are avid enthusiasts of water pipes, and you may have a water pipe collection started like most of us! Having water in our water pipes definitely seems like a ‘no brainer,’ but it begs the question - Does the water in our water pipes really help?

The answer is simple: Absolutely! However, there are key reasons why water in our glass water pipes is so beneficial. Cloud 9 Smoke Co has all the details ready for you on the benefits of water in your water pipe!

#1 Filtration

Having water in your glass water pipe helps to filtrate your smoke. In comparison to smoking from a hand pipe, joint, or other dry-herb smoking methods, water pipes have the ability to filtrate out any harmful byproducts in your smoke.

When your smoke comes into contact with water and begins to bubble, the process of the bubbling is able to filtrate out the harmful byproducts, such as resin and tar, while containing it in the water. It doesn’t rid them completely, but it definitely cuts them down a size to be a healthier alternative than traditional smoking methods.

Having a percolator to aid in filtration with your water helps out by ten-fold! The percolator works alongside the water to reduce the amount of hot smoke that’s inhaled after a drag is finished. This is done through a process called aeration.

#2 Aeration

Aeration is a scientific term that simply means that water and air are coming into contact with one another. So when you’re using water in your glass water pipe, you’re introducing the air and smoke from your dry herb with water to be aerated. When the water is aerating your smoke, it is diffusing the harshness of your smoke to a more palatable level. This is when our throats and lungs give us a huge ‘thank you’ when the smoke is smooth and sent to the dome!

Having percolators aids in this process by acting as a catalyst (speeding agent) to the aeration process. The tiny holes or slits in your percolator increases the amount of airflow and contact with the water to diffuse the intensity of heat in your smoke. When percs come into play, the smoke from your hits will be as smooth as butter!

If you have a water pipe with a percolator, downstem, or multiple chambers, your smoke will go through the filtration process multiple times before it reaches you. We’ve all seen some pretty amazing recycler water pipes that have external arms that our smoke travels through before it gets to us. By doing that, our smoke is contacting water and filtrating at a minimum of four times before we take the final inhale!

#3 Remember to Use Clean and Cold Water

Having clean water in your glass water pipe offers the best performance for filtration and aeration! Clean water offers the most pure, uninterrupted, contact for your smoke to optimally filtrate and diffuse into a seamless transition.

If you use dirty water, you may experience clogs in your percolators or downstem. It’ll also result in a gnarly taste of dirty water that will keep the profiles of your terpenes out of the mix. We all know that a great sesh is full of terpene flava!

Filling your water pipe with cold water helps to have a smooth smoke sesh! Without cool water, you may experience harsher hits than you’d like. Warm water may keep the heat of your smoke intact, whereas cool water acts as an agent to keep your smoke fresh, smooth, and seamless.

Water - It’s Important!

Now that you have the ultimate guide of understanding why water is important to use as part of your water pipe experience! Remember, water acts as a filter for your smoke by keeping harmful byproducts of smoke at bay. In comparison to traditional smoking methods, such as papers and hand pipes, water pipes have the ability to offer you a healthier smoke sesh!

Water also acts as an aerator, which in simplest terms means that it will cool and diffuse your smoke before it reaches your throat. To help in the aeration process, it's great to have a percolator in your water pipe so your smoke can have repeated contact with air and water!

If your glass water pipe has multiple chambers, or external arms, this improves the filtration and aeration process by forcing your smoke to come into contact with air and water at a minimum of 4 times before it reaches the dome! Talk about effortless rips!

Using clean, cool water makes a huge difference in your smoking experience with a water pipe! Having clean water to start a sesh off allows your smoke to have complete contact with your water and you’ll be able to experience the full terpene profiles of your favorite dry herb. By keeping the temperature of your water cool, you’re giving your smoke the ample environment to cool down before the final draw! That way, your throat and lungs can stay in tip-top shape.
