The downstem is the part of your water pipe used to transport smoke from your slide to the base of your water pipe. Oftentimes, downstems contain tiny slits at the end of their tube to filtrate and diffuse your smoke by creating bubbles in the base of your water pipe! Downstem Sizes and Lengths

To help you gauge which size your water pipe’s joint is, take your middle finger and ring finger and insert them in the joint of your water pipe. If your middle finger fits, your water pipe’s joint size is 18mm. However, if your ring finger fits snugly inside, your water pipe’s joint size is 14mm.
Knowing the length of your downstem will help you choose the right downstem to fit inside your water pipe without being too short or too long. On average, water pipe downstems range in length from 2.5” to 5” or longer! Always measure the length of the original downstem of your water pipe before selecting a new downstem for your smoking experience.
